Exceptional Trading
Published in Hardcover by Traders Pr (21 September, 1999)
Authors: Ruth Roosevelt and Ruth Barrons Roosevelt
Average review score:

Ok
Another psycho analysis book on trading, this one is actually applicable to non trading psychology. I especially liked the chapter on "Emotions", as many of it made sense to me and could possibly be applicable. However, the book is nothing special otherwise.

belongs in the self help section
I bought this book mainly because of the glowing reviews, and was mostly disappointed. This is an ok book if you are new to the game and have not come across the standard wisdom presented, but if you have been around the block once or twice there is not much here of interest. I have read some of the better trading books in my library five times over (and still go back to some of them), while this book was knocked out in a few hours on a lazy weekend afternoon and I haven't gone back to it since. Two traders are interviewed in on-off style throughout the book, Linda Raschke and some no-name guy who we are assured is a great trader, and both of them come off as flat, with nothing new to say. The interviews provided about as much unique insight and content as the locker room commentary given by professional athletes after the game.

There are a lot of generalities in this book. The concepts and ideas are true and applicable, but they are very common. If the psychological guidance in a book on trading can be applied equally to any other endeavor that requires skill and concentration (making you a better rock climber, chess player, yachtsman, etc.) then it is likely not the most valuable information. There are lots of imagination exercises, blank spaces and places to fill in your goals, talk about your dreams and motivations, etc.- but how is this different from a self help book or motivational seminar, and what does this have to do with the business of making money in the markets? If trading was really just 90% motivation and positive psychology, then Tony Robbins could start a hedge fund and clean up. That just ain't the way it is. You can be the most motivated, psychologically integrated and enthusiastic person on the planet, with infinite patience and humility....but if your method sucks, then you are still going to lose, lose, LOSE....and you may be forced to earn a living from the markets indirectly by writing motivational books on trading.

There isn't anything wrong with this book. The observations are reasonable and the self-help exercises may be of use to some. There are also useful tips on arranging your trading office, determining the height of your computer screen, and even an outline of feng shui principles (I kid you not). But for real substance one could do better.

An edge, sound money management... ...and this book!
We all know the elements of successful trading. Some kind of Edge, sound Money Management principles and a disciplined, flexible Mind. The subject of trading psychology is perhaps the most neglected part of this master plan.

Van Tharp, Mark Douglas, Adrienne Toghraie and Carl-Gustav Gyllenram all have some interesting and highly educational books (and courses) dealing with this subject. However, I rank this as the best book on trading psychology I have come across.

In my work as a stock broker, I encounter winning and losing traders all the time. My experience is that most customers lose, on balance. It is an undisputed fact that losing traders have strikingly similar attributes. In general the losers remain losers because of the following facts:

1. They lack the necessary knowledge. 2. They fail to admit when they are wrong, ie they don't use stop-losses. 3. They overtrade. 4. They have no mental discipline.

This book does not provide the reader with any useful information whatsoever regarding indicators, trading systems or elaborate theories regarding the markets. Rather, it provides some highly informative, thought-provoking pages about your biggest enemy in the market... ...yourself.

I do not recommend that you read this book. Rather, I recommend that you work your way through it with an open mind. Digest it as you search your soul for those unpleasant truths about your trading, your life, and yourself.

I promise you that it will be one of the most profitable learning experiences that you will ever find...

Italian at a Glance: Phrase Book & Dictionary for Travelers (Barron's Languages at a Glance)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (October, 1992)
Authors: Mario Costantino, Mario Constantino, Heywood Wald, and Juan Suarez

No knowledge of the Italian Language
Just returned from Florence and other parts of Tuscany. The book is organized by topic (shopping, eating out, sight seeing, etc.)and each page of the separate topic is color-coded, thus it is very easy to use. It contains some everyday/slang (not dirty!) Italian words and shows you how to say all words phonetically. It is also very compact and could fit in your pants pocket or purse. The only downside is that the dictionary in the back of the book is small and it didn't have many of the words we were trying to interpret. I would highly recommend it - it got us through two weeks in Italy and in some rural locations where noone spoke English!

Just returned from Rome!
I borrowed this book from a friend to use during my recent trip to Rome. I found it very useful and easy to use. Compact and easy to carry in a purse or pocket. However, I lost it halfway through my trip and could not find another one in Rome! Therefore, I am buying my friend a new one and myself one for reference!

Passport Companion
I gave this book 5 stars because when I was in Sicily visitng my best friend, it really helped me tremendously. I was fortunate that the staff in Rome and Catania airports spoke English. In the neighboring towns I had to use it frequently. Later on I remembered certain phrases and used it with ease. I couldn't believe that this book was sectioned well with the food descriptions, emergency medical, pharmacy, and in case of auto accidents. At the end of my trip, I was reluctant to give away this book, but she being in the service, I knew she needed it more than me. No sooner than I returned home, I bought a new one for my return trip back. I took this little book everywhere with me along with my passport. I'll be sure to get one for my trip to Paris next year.

Learn Italian (Italiano) the Fast and Fun Way/With Barron's Italian-English English-Italian Dictionary
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (July, 1997)
Authors: Marcel Danesi and Heywood Wald

A good course
It`s a pretty clear and informative Italian course for beginners - a good combination of basic grammar and useful vocabulary. Though it`s still better to use some audio course I would still recommend this one.

A good course
Well, that`s a pretty good course - pretty clear and informative. I would recommend it as one of the best ones.

Great
This is broken down really well for you and is basically part book- part workbook. There are plenty of activities to take part in to help you learn this language. However it doesn't get a five because it doesn't come with a tape, though 4 are available to go with it for over 30 dollars. Also, you only learn present and imperative tenses, which may have been more complicated to learn but it should be in there if you want to concern yourself with it. It is really informative and amusing and holds your attention. It does this by keeping the lessons quick and to the point with a little humor here and there. Remember that Learning Italian and learning Italian for sake of a quick bout of tourism ''just enough'' to get by... very different things. As for just the bout of tourism, this is more than enough to get you by and would work great. As for grasping the whole language, if you really feel you need to... you'd not only need the past tense and so on, but you'd definetely need alot of cassettes for example and the ability to read whole paragraphs with ease. This won't get you there, but it'll teach you the basic language.

A Lesson Before Dying (Cliffs Notes)
Published in Paperback by Cliffs Notes (September, 1999)
Author: Durthy A. Washington
Average review score:

C'mon, just read the book!
I read the "real book" in a day and I am not a very fast reader. It was great. Don't waste your money on the Cliff Notes. Read the real thing.

Great for Book Club Discussion
Having grown up in the same era in the South myself I identified with so much of this book. I liked it because it causes the reader to think about great questions: What does it mean to be a man? Who needs the "Lesson Before Dying" the most?--the condemned man or his teacher? Can a man kneel and stand at the same time? (So the Preacher asks the Teacher.) I also think the way the teacher has to decide between "flight" and "standing fast" is at the heart of the story. It is so much more than merely a book about capital punishment.

One of the must read novels of any college student
We had to read this book for a reading class and it touched my heart very deeply and showed me just how inhumane the death penalty is and the effects it has on not only the condemned but to the victims families. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has views on capital punishment and a must read for anyone.

CliffsTestPrep TOEFL® CBT

Author: Michael A. Pyle
Average review score:

How can I get the listening?
No doubt Cliff notes is the best in preparation to aplication exams, but I missed the CD or Files with the listening exercises .

USEFUL BOOK
The book is really very useful.
1) Comprehensive grammar. I have hardly ever seen so broad and full grammar section although I had Kaplan, Barrons, Cambridge, and Princenton. If you have problem with grammar review buy this book. Moreover, mini tests after each grammar subsection reinforce you memory. In addition, the grammar looks like very close to that in real test.
2) Reading section is also very good. The book presents a lof of helpful techniques how to approach to reading section of the test. This section also can be qualified as the best among Toefl tests books.
3) Listening section is fair. Listening comprehension section is much better in Kaplan and Delta Key for the Toefl test.
4) Book is very effective in terms of practicing the test. 6 full scale test included in the book allowe you get used to toefl pacing and timing.
Generally, there is no single book for the Toefl. As I mentioned, Kaplan is better for listening comprehension part while Cambridge Preparation for the Toefl Test is definitely the best for Essay section. If you know English well and need only practice I recommend you buy Delta Key for the Toefl Test with CD Rom. The Delta's CD has 10 !!! tests.

Very good!
I have taken the TOEFL 3 times and I have been successful each og every of them and I used just this book. I consider that the authors have made the material really accessible and don't mess up with grammatical details that at the end, won't help you. However, they gave you the tools to build up a strong base to "understand" the english grammar. If you are planning to take the GMAT after the TOEFL , this book is useful to the basics of Sentence Correction.

Essentials of English (Barron's Essentials of English, 5th Ed)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (September, 2000)
Authors: Vincent F. Hopper, Cedric Gale, Ronald C. Foote, and Benjamin W. Griffith
Average review score:

this was the worst
This was the worst example I have ever come across.
I'm a college student and this set of books is what we have been using in english to brush up on grammer. As you may notice mine is still awful. My entire class is extreamy frustrated and highly dissapointed with this poor excuse of a tex/work book.
I think it is wort nothing more than 0 stars!!!

A Great Resource
'Essentials of English' is a great resource book to have on hand should you be uncertain if you are expressing yourself correctly in the written word. It is very concise, and while a bit 'dry', does not waste time in teaching you what you should know about the English language. But I am worried that I won't be able to remember what I am trying to remember from this book. I fear that no matter how hard I try, it is not sinking in and I just can't get it right. So while the book is excellent, I myslef am a failure on many counts.

Five Stars, Whether I like it or not
I gave this book five stars even though I think the book is rather stiff and boring. The newer grammar books have more zest and personality that make it easier for a dreamer like me to understand what they mean by an antecedent, or a dangling modifier or nonrestrictive clause. I think you know what I mean.

The reason I gave "Essentials of English" a five-star rating is: when I need and answer to a grammar problem and I can't find it in all of my grammar books, I can always rely on "Essentials of English" to have my answer. That rates a five-star rating with me.

Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities (Cliffs Notes)
Published in Paperback by Cliffs Notes (November, 1988)
Author: James Weigel
Average review score:

Hard to Get Through..but takes an interesting turn
I'm a freshman in high school, and our book project is to read a Tale of Two Cities. I can't say that it was a piece of cake. It took me about a week and a few days to get through the first book. All I kept thinking over and over was "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." and it started to make me crazy. I finally got up to a little past book two, and it became interesting. I don't recommend this book to people with a limited amount of time to read it in, because it won't happen. For those of you that have the time, it's a great book.

There are two cities.
There is not much I can say. The only important thing is that some people will like it and others have the opposite reaction. People should read it because it is an interesting book.

This book is a savior for my sanity
I didn't buy the hard copy of this book; I downloaded it from the website. However, I will refer to this work as a book.

First, let me say that this book is not intended as a replacement, but rather as a supplement to A Tale of Two Cities. If A Tale of Two Cities is assigned to you, this book will not get you out of reading and doing your real work.

The point I would like to make, however, is that this book will keep you sane while you are reading the real thing. The Cliff's Notes series is designed to inform readers of points that they may have missed, whether it be the plot, the literary elements, or the background of the author and the setting. This book gave me a massive amount of insight into A Tale of Two Cities. I would highly recommend it. I referred to it often while reading the book as well as while writing my report at the end. In closing, this is a great work, a great study guide, but a very poor replacement for the real thing.

John Milton's Paradise Lost
Published in Paperback by Chelsea House Publishing (July, 1999)
Authors: Harold Bloom and John Milton
Average review score:

Nerve deadening
Unreadable. This endless poem is so stuck in the "old time religion" that it is totally irrelvant to modern readers.

Some people don't know what they're reviewing
I was confused by other people's reviews on this book and I'm sure other people have been as well. This is NOT John Milton's epic, but actually a collection of historical criticisms on this work. I ordered this book by accident, basing my decision on other people's comments, but luckily I was glad about what I found. So if you want a perspective of famous views on Paradise Lost, buy this book. But if you want to buy John Milton's classic (which I would recommend as well), buy another book.

The epic of mankind
This is arguably the single best work ever written in the English language -- or in any language. Milton sets out to 'justify the ways of God to man' - could there be a bigger task? And comes darn close. The story of God and Satan, Adam and Eve, Paradise Lost is the epic of mankind. Written in blank verse, it is thick and a bit tough to get through at first -- but as with all things, perseverance pays off and soon you'll be loving the verse.

Don't just read it once, though. This is one of those books that is better studied than read -- and there are lots of things you'll get the second, third, fourth time through that you won't the first.

Everyone should read this. That'd be a step toward Utopia.

And yes, I am Generation X.

Keys to Preparing and Caring for Your Second Child (Barron's Parenting Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (August, 1991)
Author: Meg Zweiback
Average review score:

Not really worth it
I found this book to have a lot of advice that is mostly common sense stuff and I didn't really learn anything from it. My first child will be 14 1/2 months old when the new baby is born and this book doesn't give any usefull information for that age difference. I also didn't care too much for the way it is put together. It is sort of like a collection of thoughts strung together and called a book. Unfortunately there isn't much out there on this subject but if you are having a second child and just want to read everything you can about it, especially if your first child will be over 3 when the new baby comes then go ahead and get this book.

If you are well read, not too helpful a book.
I bought this book anticipating some great hints, knowledge or insight into having our second child and preparing our first for that event. In my view, I felt the book was a waste of my time. I have read various articles, whether online or in magazine print about preparing for a second child, and this book was a disappointment--no great insights, and most of the material was based on common sense. Hopefully, one of the other books on the topic will be a better read.

excellent and complete for before and after
What is great about this book is that it covers pregnancy and the time after birth equally well. I wish that I had had some of the advice earlier, but the book would be worthwhile even for just the second half. It was especially helpful to have a guide to how to handle some of the really tough times we had with our 3 1/2 yr. old when the baby was about six months old. Highly recommended!

Koi: Everything About Selection, Care, Nutrition, Diseases, Breeding, Pond Design and Maintenance, and Popular Aquatic Plants (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (September, 1995)
Author: George C. Blasiola
Average review score:

Ok
Where's the part about behavior, the part about training your fish to come on over (admittedly this is easy) and how about a more comprehensive types and markings - it was also sad they really skipped over butterfly koi. Otherwise nice pictures and a good disease section.

Oh well. Nice book to have, but it is not by any means complete.

Good, but could be better
This book includes everything you need to take care of koi, but sometimes in too much detail. Many of the items in this book are exactly the opposite of what I have read elsewhere (e.g wheatgerm sticks are bad for koi??)
While too much detail is usually the problem, there are also many parts when there are not enough facts to actually understand what thi book is trying to say.
It's an OK beginners guide, but some parts can be tedious and confusiong.

One of the two books you need.
This book has all the information you need on keeping Koi. Don't let its small size fool you. I have browse through all available Koi books, this book is the only one you need. You will not get more information from other books, except for more pictures. Buy this book and another book titled "The ponder's Bible" for excellent information on pond building and maintenance. These two books will be more than enough for keeping Koi sucessfully.
